Visa and Passport
1. What should I do about the visa application process after getting a new passport?
Those who obtain a new passport in China should apply for a visa within 10 days of receiving the new passport; those who obtain a new passport in their home country should enter with both the old and new passports and apply for visa extension at the Student Management Office before the visa expires.
2. What if I want to enter without a visa?
After entering China without a visa, you can no longer apply for or change to other visas and residence permits. You can only leave the country within the validity period, and can only apply for a residence permit after entering with another visa.
3. What should I do with my visa after arriving in China?
Within 30 days after arriving in China, the X1 visa needs to be converted into a residence permit; the X2 visa does not require conversion to a residence permit.
4. How can I obtain a visa to China after being admitted to Sichuan Jiaotong Vocational and Technical College?
Please apply for a Chinese study visa at the Chinese embassy/consulate in the applicant's country with the admission letter issued by Sichuan Communications Vocational and Technical College and the Chinese study visa application form (JW201/202). If the study period in China does not exceed 6 months, apply for an X2 visa. If the study period in China exceeds 6 months, an X1 visa must be applied for.
5. How to cancel a visa/residence permit?
When you experience academic changes such as suspension, leave of absence, retention of enrollment status, transfer, or withdrawal, you must cancel the visa or residence permit issued in the name of Sichuan Communications Vocational and Technical College and apply for a 1-month 0-stay visa. Otherwise, the school cannot approve the academic status change.
Note: Don't take your residence permit lightly when it expires, as it may result in illegal stay!
The expiration of a visa or residence permit, or the absence of accommodation registration or the expiration of accommodation registration, is considered a violation of China's relevant laws, resulting in illegal residence. The public security authorities will impose severe penalties, ranging from warnings, fines of 500 to 10,000 yuan, detention, or even deportation, depending on the severity of the case. Therefore, students must always pay attention to their visa and accommodation registration status to avoid unnecessary trouble.
6. How to replace a lost passport?
When you discover and confirm that your passport is lost, you must immediately follow the following procedure to minimize the loss.
International students should report the lost item to the local police station with valid identification and obtain a loss report certificate.
Go to the International College office to get the relevant letter of proof.
Bring the passport loss certificate issued by the police station and the certificate letter issued by the International Student Management Office to the local public security bureau to obtain a passport loss certificate.
If you have lost your passport, you can apply for a new one at the Chinese embassy in your country.
After obtaining the new passport, international students must first apply for accommodation certification within 10 days of receiving the passport, then submit visa-related documents to the International College Office, proceed to the Chengdu Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration for visa or residence permit reissuance procedures, and promptly complete the update of accommodation registration.
Note: If you need to replace your passport:
After you change your passport in China, you must first apply at the International College Office within 10 days of receiving the passport, and then go to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Chengdu Public Security Bureau to complete the passport number change procedures. Otherwise, you will be punished for illegal residence.

8. What are the differences between X1 and X2 visas?
X1 Visa: Designed for students with study durations exceeding 180 days, this visa allows a maximum stay of 30 days upon entry. Applicants must complete registration and obtain a study residence permit within the visa's validity period.
X2 Visa: Designed for students with a study period of up to 180 days. The visa allows the same duration of stay as the visa's stated period, with no additional residence permit required.
9. What documents are required to apply for a study residence permit?
The required documents include: the original passport with the first page and visa page copies; an application letter issued by the school; one 2-inch passport photo; the Temporary Residence Registration Form for Foreign Nationals; the admission notice and JW201/202 form (yellow copy); and a valid medical examination report (required for first-time applicants or those with a residence permit expired for over three months).
10. If you need to exit after entering with an X2 visa, can you still return to China with the original visa?
No. X2 visas are usually valid for a single entry. Once you exit the country, the original visa automatically expires, and you cannot re-enter China with that visa. If you need to leave the country during your studies, you must apply in advance to the International Student Management Office and reapply for the corresponding type of study visa based on the remaining study duration to avoid affecting your return to campus for enrollment due to visa issues.
11. Do you need to make copies of your passport and residence permit for archiving purposes? What should you keep in mind when archiving them?
We strongly recommend making 2-3 copies of each page of your passport (including the personal information page, visa page, and residence permit page), while also maintaining a clear digital copy (which can be stored in an encrypted format or sent to your personal email). Important notes for archiving: Keep copies and digital versions separate from the originals to prevent simultaneous loss. Do not share your documents with unauthorized individuals. Only provide them to official agencies when handling formal procedures (such as renting a property or applying for scholarships). If you need to update your documents (e.g., obtaining a new passport or renewing a residence permit), promptly update the archived copies and digital versions to ensure the information matches the current documents.
